Salvador Dalí named the city “The centre of the world” – even though it is not. It is located on the river Têt, 13km west of the Mediterranean Sea and 31km north of the Spanish border. Between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea, Perpignan is a city in south-east France, in the region of Languedoc-Rosellón. The city has been known as the capital of the Pyrénées-Orientales since the French Revolution. It is also considered the capital of North Catalonia, where people speak both French and Catalan.
It currently has 300.000 inhabitants. The historical centre is known as La Ciudadela o “Citadelle”; there you can find the main monuments and museums.
