Cesena is a small city located in the region of Emilia Romagna away from sightseeing tours and close to the seaside. Historically, Cesena origins can be traced by Umbrian tribes who settled in the area around the 5th/6th century BC. Cesena was a free commune during the medieval period with periodic struggles against the forces of nearby Forli and Rimini. In the late of 14th century, the city fell under the control of the Malatesta family, who governed it until 1465. After a brief period, the city returned to the direct control of the Papal State and in the late 18th century two popes came from Cesena, Pius VI and Pius VII. After the restoration, it took part in the Carbonari uprising and in 1860 the people in Cesena voted to become part of the new kingdom of Italy.
Today, the city is marked  by many different civilisations over time and the city’s history is rich and complex. Recently, Cesena is one of the best destination if you want to feel italian daylife without crowds of tourists.
